Tuesday 27th May 2025 mentee session

0:00 The session began with a focus on organizing a webinar for the APBC to gather insights from the veterinary team about a new product for dogs. Danielle Beck highlighted the need for this webinar to clarify best practices for using the product, especially in combination with other medications like fluoxetine. Nikki McLeod pointed out that the new product could potentially be more effective than current options such as gabapentin for calming dogs in stressful situations. Danielle also mentioned that Dharma Farm is preparing to launch a licensed version of fluoxetine, expected to be more affordable than Reconcile. The group agreed on the importance of understanding how the product should be applied in different contexts.

The discussion then shifted to behavioral and health issues in dogs, focusing on a six-month-old Golden Retriever exhibiting frustration and aggression, particularly towards children. Nikki McLeod noted that the owner’s expectations for the puppy were unrealistic, while Danielle Beck emphasized the importance of proactive management, adequate rest, and appropriate training. The group stressed that puppies should not be left unsupervised with children and suggested strategies to address these behavioral challenges, including providing mental stimulation and structured play. Jessie introduced the “Carl hack,” using animated toys to engage puppies, and Danielle recommended rewarding positive behaviors by scattering treats around the home.

Health concerns were also discussed, particularly regarding a French Bulldog with excessive panting and possible underlying conditions. Lucy W and Nikki observed that such symptoms are often normalized in certain breeds, which can result in overlooked health issues. Danielle raised concerns about how breathing difficulties might contribute to the dog’s reactivity, and Nikki suggested a telemedicine consultation to review the dog’s health history before any physical examination.

Finally, the group discussed the importance of prioritizing life skills over traditional obedience training. Lucy emphasized training methods that address the broader needs of both dogs and their owners. Danielle announced a new initiative to provide pre-recorded consultation videos featuring various case studies, allowing participants to review and critique them together to enhance their understanding and approach to dog behavior and training.
